Ms. F. Y. is a 58-yr-old woman whose husband brought her to the emergency department (ED) this morning after she awoke with a sudden onset of excruciating pain in her left great toe. She denies any injury to her foot. She says she has never had this type of pain before. BP 128/94, heart rate 88, respiratory rate 26, temp 96.8° F, O2
saturation 98%. Alert and oriented × 3. Lungs are clear bilaterally. Left great toe is red and swollen. No open wounds. Tremendous pain on palpation and with any movement of the left great toe. +1 Pedal pulses bilaterally.
