Is there an over-diagnosis problem with depression? Some psychologists believe that there is an issue with over-diagnosing depression in individuals, meaning a significant portion of people may only be experiencing momentary sadness. Researchers have found that the symptoms of depression have not changed over the years, but the rate of diagnosis has, which means there could be too much room for interpretation. One of the main arguments is that the DSM III broadening the category of depression without incorporating the impact of typical life events (illness, death, moving, school etc.). The drug companies also played into this by saying all unhappiness is related to a chemical imbalance not the stressors of everyday life. Some mental health professionals feel that this could lead to a lack of proper diagnosis or treatment for people how are experiencing major mental health issues (bipolar, major depression etc.). Are doctors over-diagnosing individuals with depression and does this have an effect on those individuals who are actually experiencing a major mood disorder?
