A 29-year-old man is brought to the emergency department after being involved in a motor vehicle collision. The patient was riding a motorcycle through a traffic intersection when he was hit by a pickup truck at high speed and was thrown from the bike. He did not sustain any head injuries or lose consciousness. Upon arrival, temperature is 37.8°C (100.0°F), blood pressure is 122/71 mmHg, pulse is 85/min, respirations are 17/min, and oxygen saturation is 95% on room air. Physical examination reveals diffuse bruising and lacerations. A portion of the right chest wall is noted to move outward during expiration and inwards on inspiration.
