Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to introduce the main concepts of interpreting topographic maps. Exercises will focus on contour lines, features, compass direction, cross-sections and learning to distinguish relief. All maps are two-dimensional, small-scale representation of the Earth's surface. Topographic maps contain much of the same information as a road map, but they also provide a third dimension, elevation above or depth below sea level. During this exercise you will learn how to visualize this third dimension using contour lines and we will use this knowledge to identify features found along the Earth's surface.
