Question

In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a framework for action on interprofessional education and collaborative practice, which came forty years after the introduction of interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaboration (IPC). IPE combines knowledge, attitudes, values, skills, and behaviors that promote team-based problem-solving and quality healthcare. IPC involves interacting with professionals from various disciplines who share the same goals with collective action. The WHO report emphasizes the importance of institutional support and working culture mechanisms, such as communication strategies, conflict resolution policies, and shared decision-making, to address implementation issues in healthcare systems. The WHO framework also recommends implementing actions in academic and healthcare systems, including the development of core competencies for collaborative practice in all professional curricula. This would embed essential content of interprofessional communication, patient-family-centered care, role clarification, collaborative leadership, and conflict resolution. Students who participate in IPE are more likely to collaborate and implement interprofessional healthcare, resulting in improved healthcare experience, quality, and cost reduction.
