Question

Vulnerability of an individual means that a person is at an increased risk for health issues due to their social, environmental, or physical state. Vulnerability of a population means that a group of people are at increased risk for health issues due to decreased access to healthcare, racial discrimination, or age. Examples of two vulnerable populations include the elderly and the homeless. The elderly often have decreased access to care due to their physical inabilities. They may have no way of getting to and from appointments. They are also at an increased risk for developing chronic diseases such as dementia and parkinsons which can make it significantly harder to care for themselves if they do not have means of a caretaker. The homeless are at extreme risk for developing illnesses due to poor sanitation. They are also at risk for substance abuse and mental health issues due to lack of access to means of living and resources. I can give an example of patient advocacy from my own experience. On my unit, I care for a lot of individuals who are homeless and face issues related to substance abuse and access to resources.
