Alice Porter is a 67-year-old single woman who is lives alone in an income-assisted rental facility. Alice has lived a hard life. Her only friend is another single woman living in the same building.

Alice has smoked all her life and continues to smoke 2 to 3 packs a day. Six months ago she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Her lung function was so poor she was not a candidate for surgery. She has undergone radiation treatments but has refused further treatment.

Her friend has expressed concern that Alice's health is deteriorating. Alice's family wants nothing to do with her. Alice's only joy in life is to play bingo once a week at the local bingo hall. Recently she has been too unwell to make the bus trip to the bingo hall.
