Human Rights Assignment

Purpose: Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Unfortunately, many individuals' human rights are being violated and we as CYC's play an important role in advocating for clients whose rights are being denied.

Instructions: Students will select and research a human rights violation that is currently occurring in Canada. Students will answer each question listed using one or two paragraphs for each section as appropriate. Students can complete this assignment on their own or with a partner. No Groups!

Evaluation: The students will be marked on the following criteria:

Introduction:

• Introduce the topic of human rights and the importance of the Human Rights Code.

Overview of a Current Human Rights Violation that is occurring in Canada:

• Identify (1) and describe (1) a human rights violation that is currently occurring in Canada.

• Which Human Rights within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is being violated? Explain.

o There may be more than one! Please refer to: Universal Declaration of Human Rights

• Provide a detailed overview of the violation and the background on the issue.

• Include current statistics related to the violation.

• Who is primarily being impacted by this violation? Explain.

• What is currently being done by society to address this violation? How effective are these interventions? Explain.

Future Recommendations:

• What do you believe needs to be done at a societal level to address this human violation? Explain.

• What are 3 things you can do as CYC to address this human violation? Explain.

Conclusion:

• Summarize your observations and thoughts regarding this assignment and evaluate the benefits of the material to you as a child and youth care practitioner
