Topic: health, safety, and nutrition
The concept of health, safety, and nutrition in the early childhood environment has two distinct components. First, you create health, safety, and nutrition guidelines. Second, you teach children about health, safety, and nutrition.
Let's explore these ideas for a moment. We know that children must wash their hands several times a day for health reasons. Remembering that there are two parts to this, you can build handwashing into the schedule to promote a healthy environment. Then, you teach children the importance of washing hands and create developmentally appropriate ways for them to practice. Perhaps a picture at the sink reminding them to wash the fronts and backs of each hand and a handwashing song that encourages them to scrub for a specific time length. Encourage them to teach the handwashing song to their families.
