Question
Describe a change, big or small, that you feel should be implemented in your current or a prior workplace.
Nursing is based on evidence-based practice which consists of frequent changes to provide the most optimal quality of medical care. Lewin's change theory relates to evidence-based practice. The Lewins change theory is described as three steps unfreezing, Moving, and Refreezing. In the nursing process unfreezing is assessing, Moving is planning and implementing, and refreezing is evaluation. Hourly rounding is an evidence-based practice that should be implemented at my workplace as research has proven to improve communication and improve patient satisfaction as an important factor that influences the perceived quality of care delivered (JEN, 2020). During hourly rounding, you are unfreezing/ assessing which identifies the problem as Lewin's theory explains.
If you were the unit manager, describe the steps you would take to facilitate this change according to Lewin.
As the manager and change agent, to initiate a change, one must collect data/ opinions on the study of interest from all the staff, then identify the problem to define the outcome. The staff would be provided with data with positive outcomes and if hourly rounding is successful, the call light system will decrease as needs are anticipated at once. (JEN,2020)
Hypothesize the potential facilitators and barriers associated with a Force Field Analysis of this change, and how you would utilize this information.
Lewin stated "The process of change may flow back and forth among stages. It is not a simple linear process in which one step follows the preceding one. The process may move rapidly, or it may stall in any one phase. The goal of planned change is to plan, control, and evaluate the change" that is what I could find as a potential barrier. The interest in the change implementation in hourly rounding could possibly be the facilitator to make this research a positive outcome.
Answer this prompts: basing on the statement above:
Give feedback regarding other factors in Lewin's three steps that should be considered when contemplating this change.
Comment on the impact of the described facilitators and barriers, and your opinion regarding the success of this change, according to Lewin.
