Question

Brian was taken to the emergency department of a public hospital in the middle of winter after falling over, breaking his leg, and temporarily losing consciousness. Records show he lives alone and does not have any family or support. The doctors are recommending that Brian goes into an Aged Care facility for respite, but Brian is refusing. You are the hospital counsellor, and you are called to discuss Brian's options.

1. Provide one example of how the counsellor's personal beliefs could impact the ethical nature of the counselling relationship.

2. State the ethical principle(s) relevant to the scenario- refer to Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) Code of Ethics to inform your final decisions to guide you. Careful consideration of relevant State and/or Federal legislation should also be included.

3. Describe any relevant reporting issues providing reasons for your answers.

4. Discuss a possible course of action for the counsellor to take to resolvethe dilemma in this scenario.
