The impact of energy uses in industry

Various industries and the processes within these industries are highly energy intensive, and industrial sectors worldwide are responsible for a large percentage of total energy consumption. While certain industries use electricity as their sole source of energy, others also use gas, oil, petroleum products, coal, or renewable energy. The types of energy used, as well as the quantities, depend on energy end use for various industrial applications.

In this small group discussion, you are encouraged to discuss energy use in industry. This can include answering the following questions:

1. In your opinion, what industries consume the most energy?

2. What types of energy are used in different industries, and for what applications?

3. Where do you think there may be opportunities for energy-efficiency interventions in various industries?

4. What options would you recommend various industries adopt to mitigate the environmental impacts associated with using large amounts of energy?
