Question: Refer to Exercise, in which correlations were given for the relationship between hours of watching music videos and both perceived appearance and weight concerns. The correlations were based on data from 837 ninth-grade girls.
a. Do the correlation values given by the researchers indicate weak or strong relationships between the variables? Support your answer with a sketch illustrating the appearance of a scatterplot for the given correlation values.
b. Read the paragraph on page 561 about the effect of sample size on significance. Discuss the issue addressed in that paragraph in the context of this example.
Exercise: A sample of 837 ninth-grade girls was asked how much time they spent watching music videos each week. The girls also were asked to rate how concerned they were about their weight on a scale of 0 to 100 (100 = extremely concerned) as well as to rate their perception of how important appearance is on a scale of 1 to 6 (6 = very important). The researchers (Borzekowski et al., 2000) wrote the following about the results: "When media use was separated into distinct media genres, only hours of watching music videos was related to perceived importance of appearance and weight concerns (r = .12, p)
a. What are the null and alternative hypotheses for which p-values are given in the researchers' statement?
b. What conclusions have the researchers made about the hypotheses you gave in part (a)?
