The computer housings must be shipped to
the assembly plant. Shipping trucks have dimensions of 12 m long by 3.6 m wide by 3.0 m high. Each computer housing, with packaging, measures 0.5 m by 0.4 m by 0.4 m. Assume that each housing must be shipped a total of 1,000 km during its manufacturing, use and disposal.
(a) If a truck emits 0.6 grams of particulate matter per kilometer of travel, calculate the total amount of particulate matter released per housing during shipment. Compare with the total amount released from manufacturing.
(b) Properly packaged, nearly all computer housings survive transport intact. But if left unpackaged, on average 10% of the housings are damaged during shipping and must be discarded. The unpackaged dimensions of a computer housing are 0.45 m by 0.4 m by
0.2 m. Based on particulate emissions from both manufacturing and transportation of the housings, would it be more beneficial to ship packaged or unpackaged housings?
