Case Study: Due to high unemployment rate in South Africa, Refilwe has been working as a cashier at Ya - Sechaba Cash and Carry in the Limpopo province for the past three years. She obtained an Honours degree in Auditing from the University of Cape Town. There was this time when she discussed with you, the store manager, that she finds a job as a cashier very boring as it does not unleash what she can do when it comes to financial management. She even requested to shadow you as a manager during her off days to help you with the store finances. Of late, Refilwe's cash reconciliation at the end of her shift does not balance, and this translates into poor performance because it happens continuously during all her shifts. As a manager, you assumed Refilwe needed training on the new cash registers acquired three months ago. You are considering to either register her for an online course or to appoint a mentor to train her on the new cash registers. You have lately noticed that she is often absent from work and sending sick notes all the time. To you as a manager, this signals that there could be even a bigger problem than you thought.
