Scenario:

Christina is a 73 year old ex school teacher. She was very physically fit, playing tennis and swimming regularly and was an active member of her local community before a stroke. The stroke has left her with some mobility issues, a slight speech problem and weakness in her left arm which her doctor said would improve with rehabilitation.

You see her several times a week to assist with her personal care and domestic duties. You have noticed that she is getting quieter and more withdrawn each week and it seems like she never leaves the house. You have also noticed that Christina is losing weight each week and sometimes the meals you help MAKE are untouched.

You run into her daughter Melanie on your way out one day and she confirms your suspicion that Christina is no longer leaving the house, but she doesn't know what she can do about it. She asks if you can speak to Christina.

Role Play Instructions

In pairs, you are to each take the role of Christina and the support worker. As the support worker you will need to do the following:

Respectfully address the issues raised with Christina
Identify the barriers Christina may be facing physically and emotionally
Discuss with Christina her preferences for engagement and the benefits of physical and social engagement.
Identify and document on the appropriate form any duty of care or workplace health and safety issues.
