Concept: Client-Centered Care

Identify someone to interview who has a chronic illness. Divide your paper into the following sections.

Introduction: Who did you choose to interview and why?

Interview: Utilize the following questions as a guide during the interview.

1. What chronic illness does the client suffer from? Would you consider this illness to be mild, moderate or severe? How do they describe it? Explain.

2.  Describe a typical day for this person. Include their routine and the impact their health has on their daily activities.

3. How does this person cope with their illness? Are these positive or negative strategies?

4. Is this person able to afford medications and treatment for their illness? Do they adhere to treatment?

5. Is this person able to do the things they want to in life, or does their illness hold them back?

6. Does this person live with someone? Do they have any ongoing support from family or friends? Are there any agencies involved with their care? If so, which one(s)?

Personal Perspective

Put yourself in the client's shoes. How would you respond to each of the interview questions if you had your client's chronic illness?

Health Teaching

What health teaching needs were identified during the interview? Incorporate health teaching during the interview to promote self-management of their chronic illness. Reflect on the teaching completed including how the client's learning was evaluated.
