Question

Identify populations. Which populations does the organization primarily serve, and what are the health needs of those populations? Population: Sentara serves a population over an expansive service area, with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) being the largest (Sentara Health, n.d.d). In the most recent community needs assessment for this population, the service area covered care for over 1.2 million people, accounting for 14% of the population of the Commonwealth of Virginia (Sentara Health, 2022). Most of the residents are between 30-64 years old with a slightly higher percentage of those aged 65+ compared to the state. The population is female at 51% and male at 49%. The SNGH service area expects that the aging population will grow from 13.9% of the population in 2020, to 18.5% in 2030, to 18.9% by 2040; therefore, a variety of services are targeted for this population. Veterans in this service area are higher than the state or the nation, at 11.4% (Sentara Health, 2022). Rural communities have fewer households with computers and Internet access, impacting remote telehealth opportunities. Financial stability is impacted byeducation levels that are below the state average. Poverty is an issue throughout the service area, with blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans.
