Alphonso has been teaching Civics at Shady Acres Middle School for 17 years. He believes that his students learn best by getting personally involved in the democratic process, and so he has been the faculty sponsor of the school's student government organization for most of that time. When there is a local, state, or national election, he gives extra credit to his students for working as a volunteer in any candidate's campaign. Recently, a friend of his ran for a seat on the local City Council, in a close race against two other candidates. Since Alphonso's friend was running in the district in which the parents of his students live, Alphonso decided to help out his friend, and sent the students home with his friend's campaign literature to give to their parents. "Tell you parents that I heartily endorse this candidate," Alphonso said to all five of his classes.
