Activity: Analyzing Class Relations and Inequality in Sport - Traditional vs. Adventure Sports

Objective: To analyze and understand how sports in your community, both traditional and adventure sports, are connected with class relations and class inequality.

Instructions:

Case Study 1: Traditional Sport - Youth Soccer League in an Affluent Neighborhood In a wealthy part of your community, a youth soccer league is highly competitive and requires expensive equipment, private coaching, and substantial travel for tournaments. Children from lower-income families often find it difficult to participate.

Case Study 2: Adventure Sport - Exclusive Ski Resort Access An exclusive ski resort in your community caters to a high-income clientele, offering premium services and experiences. This creates a barrier for middle or lower-class individuals who might want to pursue skiing or snowboarding.

  2. Identify Class Relations and Inequality: List three ways that the chosen sports case is connected with class relations and class inequality. Consider how access, participation, representation, and experience might differ across class lines.
  3. Reflect on Your Community: Think about how the case study may reflect broader trends or issues within your community's sports culture, including both pleasure & participation sports and power & performance sports.
  4. Write a Reflection: In a brief paragraph (100 to 150 words), summarize your thoughts on the chosen case study, the connections to class relations and inequality, and any insights into your community's sports culture.
