IIA -
Betty is a recently hired internal auditor for Petrossal Company, a large oil refinery that is contemplating an initial public offering. Betty had been tasked with a now completed audit of Petrossal's tax department and is discussing the report draft with Billy, the department's manager. Billy has taken issue with one of Betty's findings and is insisting that it be deleted. After further heated discussion, Billy decides not to contest the point provided that Betty removes some of the background information that he believes casts the department in a bad light and might be misinterpreted by the board of directors. Taking a moment to consider this request, Betty focuses on two main concerns. First, other than a single course in college, Betty has had no formal training in taxation. Second, Billy has many years of experience, both in the field and with the company. Given these considerations, Betty concludes that Billy is probably in a better position to determine the most appropriate way of presenting the audit findings and to gauge how others may interpret the report. Accordingly, Betty agrees to remove the information.
