In lecture, I identified an ongoing tension in U.S. immigration policy between the fact that the U.S. (and its colonial predecessors) have continually had a low concentration of people to the land, so labor is in continuous demand and capital ensures a (largely) ongoing supply of migrant labor, and the fears and resentments of native populations about the labor competition that they perceive from immigrants, the cultural change that immigrants bring, and the risk (very rarely a real one) that immigrants challenge the nation's democratic values. In response to the demands for immigration restriction by native population, the nation has tried a variety of strategies to restrict immigration. In your post, please identify two specific policies to restrict migration that have been implemented over the course of U.S. immigration history and offer your assessment of the relative success or failure of these policies.
