Question: Acquire and apply relevant knowledge as needed to support process design decision-making

A flue gas stream is discharged from a process into the atmosphere. The stream contains 8wt-% of CO2. The remaining components in the stream are water, nitrogen and oxygen. The stream is at a pressure slightly above ambient of and has a temperature of 363 K. The CO2 mass flow rate in the stream is 1,000 t/d.

Your task is to investigate candidate technologies for the separation of the CO2 from the flue gas stream at the high purity required for sequestration. Specifically, you need to

Question 1. Identify at least three alternative separation technologies (candidate technologies) capable of recovering the CO2

Question 2. Propose and define suitable economic, environmental, safety and other relevant selection criteria to be employed in order to assess and rank the candidate technologies in terms of their suitability to address the problem at hand

Question 3. Research the performance of each candidate technology with respect to each selection criterion

Question 4. Develop a decision matrix to compare the performances candidate technologies with respect to all chosen selection criteria, and to develop an overall ranking of the candidate technologies.

Your deliverable is a report with the following contents:

1. Clear descriptions of the three candidate technologies for CO2 capture based on a literature review. This should include flow diagrams together with concise text explaining the functioning of the process.

2. Clear statements of the different selection criteria you propose to judge the technology candidates with explanations as to how each selected criterion is important to measure important technology performance aspects relevant for decision making.

3. Clear descriptions of the performance of each candidate technology with respect to each selection criteria based on published literature.

4. A decision matrix should be developed that maps the technology options against your selected decision criteria.

5. Your recommendation as to the best technology (or technologies) to be recommended for the problem together with a logical explanation of your choice based on your decision matrix.
