Attraction

For this option, students will identify a song that reflects views of attraction and intimate relationships. You can select any song with lyrics - a current popular song or a "Golden Oldie"! You will analyze the song using concepts or facts presented in three sections of Chapter 3 and explain whether or not the song fits current existing research. Be sure to provide clear, complete definitions and cite the course textbook. Remember to include citations after definitions!

  • Begin the paper by identifying the song you selected and say in general why it was chosen.
  • Identify and define/describe (in your own words!) THREE specific terms/concepts or facts from Chapter 3 that are implied or explicitly mentioned in the song. Please note that these concepts should be pulled from three different sections of the chapter. For example, the song might include lyrics related to Proximity, Physical Attractiveness, and What Do Men and Women Want? Or maybe you find a song that ties in lyrics related to material presented under the headings Proximity, Reciprocity, and Similarity. Some of these concepts' meanings seem self-explanatory, but you are still expected to fully define them in a way someone not familiar with course content could fully understand.
  • Remember to provide in-text citations after definitions or other details from the readings throughout the paper.
  • As you identify the three concepts, be sure to tie in specific information from the textbook, explaining the details/concepts to help illustrate your grasp of the content.
  • Provide specific examples of lyrics that relate to each of the three concepts and say whether the lyrics fit the research or if existing research contradicts the lyrics.
  • Conclude your paper with a brief summary of the paper as well as a statement addressing the question in the opening commentary - What are three popular beliefs about the formation and/or maintenance of romantic couple relationships that may or may not be supported by existing research? For this, think generally, not just topics addressed in these chapters but rather across the course and not necessarily topics addressed in the song. At the end of the semester, you will revisit your response using information learned this semester!
