Assignment:
Scenario 1: Aging Population
Sousa County is a rural county located near three cities. Demographic profile estimates for Sousa County are close to the trends of state and national percentages. One difference of note is that the percentage of residents older than 65 years of age is higher in Sousa County than are the state's percentages. Sousa County's crude death rate is higher than the rates for the state and the nation; this may be attributable to the large number of senior citizens who reside in the county. Each Fall, 10% of the residents over 65 develop symptoms of the Flu. Of those 10%, 25% need hospitalization and 5% die.
Scenario 2: Homelessness
The community of Finnytown has identified the need for a shelter to serve homeless women and children. Finnytown currently has a homeless shelter for men. Women and children can obtain health care services there but are not allowed to stay overnight. The Finnytown health care task force performed a community assessment that revealed that a higher number of homeless men than women reside in Finnytown, but the percentage of homeless women is steadily increasing. Results further showed that more women with children than men are living in poverty. The task force speculated that many women who are living in poverty are being overlooked and thus are becoming women without homes.
Scenario 3: Migrant Workers
Bogg County is a rural area whose residents rely on farming for income. The most popular crop in Bogg County is tobacco, a very labor-intensive plant. To save money, many farmers employ Hispanic migrant farm workers who come to the county looking for work. Migrant farm workers are cheaper to employ than other farm workers because many of them are illegal immigrants who cannot afford to complain about the low wages.
Scenario 4: Adolescent Health
Glenda R. is a parish nurse for Holy Cross Catholic Church. The church's youth group teacher has overheard several of the 13- and 14-year-old teenagers talking about dating and sexual behaviors. The community, which includes the church, has seen a recent rise in unprotected sexual activity among adolescents.
