In last week's Discussion, you engaged with the aging process and shared your thoughts on successful aging. Although everyone may have different ideas about aging and what constitutes "success," there are several established theories of successful aging. These theories explain factors that support individuals as they grow older, such as physical and mental activity and disengagement from community obligations. Individuals in later adulthood experience key life events such as retirement, relocation, and death of loved ones, among others. As a social worker, you must understand the supportive factors emphasized in theories of aging in order to address these events and their impact on older adults.
In this Discussion, you look at key life events in later adulthood through the perspective of theories of successful aging.
To prepare:
- Review the text chapter on the psychological aspects of later adulthood.
- Review the theories of successful aging described in the text and in the Theories of Aging interactive media piece.
- Select a key event in the life of an older adult and apply one theory of successful aging to this event.
Post the following:
Identify a key event in the life of an older person. Then, explain this life event and its impact in the context of one theory of successful aging.
