You Decide on Human Service Roles Today Evelina is meeting with Lisa, a 42-year-old divorced woman with two adult children. Lisa works at a salaried job and makes an adequate income to support herself. However, when her adult daughter entered a residential substance abuse treatment program, after which she will likely go to jail on a variety of alcohol- and drug-related crimes, Lisa took custody of her three granddaughters, ages 2, 5, and 9. All three girls have special needs and Lisa worries how she will address their needs and keep her job. The girls' fathers are intermittently in the picture but do not contribute financially and Lisa's salary alone is not sufficient for her new family. As Lisa is describing her circumstances, she becomes increasingly distraught, to the extent that Evelina can barely make out what Lisa is saying. Evelina considers how best to proceed. You are Evelina, and you have two choices. What approach do you decide to take? a. Your job is to complete the forms that will allow Lisa to get help for herself and her granddaughters. You offer her a tissue and ask her if she would like to take a 5-minute break to compose herself, but stay focused on getting the applications completed. b. You recognize that Lisa is overwhelmed and justifiably so. You let her vent and provide sympathetic feedback for several minutes, and then gently guide her back to completing the applications that will connect her to programs that will help.
