Assignment:
Min Soon "Sunny" is a 24 year old single Asian American female who grew up in a lower middle-class community. Her mother works as a postal clerk and her father is an airplane mechanic. Sunny and her parents live near family relatives and much of her free time is spent at family celebrations and events.
She was discouraged from making friends outside her parents' social circle thus she has only a few friends. She rarely participated in college campus activities and found the social aspects of residential college environment to be distracting to her studies. Sunny's parents placed a very high emphasis on education and encouraged her to work hard and study each evening.
Sunny graduated from a state university with a major in English. She could not find a job where she could use her degree. Eventually, she found work as wait staff at a local upscale restaurant and has been employed in this position for the past 11 months. For the past couple of weeks she reports that she has been feeling depressed and lacks energy because she feels that her life is at a dead-end.
Sunny wants to get a professional job, but does not know what to do next or even what options are open to her. She feels that she may have made the wrong decision about her major. She is considering going back to school to get another degree. Jenny who is finding it more and more difficult to remain interested in her job has come to you for career counseling.
