DEFINITIONAL ACTIVITY
Following are several definitions that were/are used to define people with lDD. These particular definitions were written by different constituency groups and/or for different purposes. Since definitions reflect societal values, drive funding and set parameters for services it is important that we look at them with a critical lens.
Mental Retardation-the level of power needed in the training process required for the individual to learn and not limitations in what can be learned. The height of a person's level of functioning is determined by the availability of technology and resources society is willing to allocate and not by significant limitations in biological potential. GOLD (1980)

Mental Retardation- refers to substantial limitations in present functioning. lt is characterized by significantly subaverage intellectual functioning existing concurrently with related limitations in two or more of the following applicable skill areas: Communication, Self-Care, Home Living, Social Skills, Community Use, Self-Direction, Health and Safety, Functional Academics, Leisure and Work. Mental Retardation manifests before age 18.
