Question: Part of maintaining the biosafety and biodefense programs within the United States requires that many potentially dangerous agents are tightly regulated. However, that doesn't eliminate human error and the potential for releases. Based on the current program established in the United States, is there any major concerns with the current system? If so, where can improvements be made? the European Union does not have a specific program like the Federal Select Agent Program, but they do have many directives such as the 2000/54/ec to protect workers and mitigate accidental releases. Do you think that other countries should adapt a program like the FSAP, if they don't already have one to include rules and regulations on how to deal with these agents as bioterror agents? Would a unified global program be appropriate or should it be left for each country to decide how to handle these agents?
