Question: The company that you are working for is responsible for the management of seven motor tankers which are approaching 14 years old. They were built as some of the first "double hulled" refined product oil carriers fitted with an inert gas system and deep-well pumps.
The next drydocking/survey cycle is now being planned and the company's Manging Director has asked you as the senior marine engineer to write a report explaining the following:
• The problems associated with, and the most efficient use of, a multicultural workforce during the time approaching the drydock. (What different tasks could the staff be used for during the voyage before docking and what management issues would you expect to overcome)
• How the vessels will be required to meet the latest environmental legislation relating to ballast water, hull coatings and efficiency gains. (Including the value of recording operating temperatures and pressures of all the different engine operating parameters to ensure the efficient operation of the plant before and after the docking)
• Outline the different surveyors that will need to be used for the different survey jobs required of the machinery plant, including how the on-board engineering team might assist to ensure that the process is as cost effective as possible.
Complete your report by explaining how the vessel will finally be re-started, following the docking, and placed
