Or, attend a live, in-person Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon meeting near you. Use the AA and Al-Anon links in the Learning Resources to find a local group.
Pay attention to professional behavior and attire when joining the meeting. If attending virtually, ensure that you are in a quiet and appropriate setting (not driving in your car, lying in bed, listening to music, etc.). Feel free to introduce yourself and be honest as to why you are there, stating that you are a social work student learning about groups. In other words, you do not need to play a role.
After attending, reflect on the group process and group dynamics you observed. Also consider the value of the self-help group as an intervention.

Submit a 2 to 3 page reflection paper in which you:

Describe the group process and the group dynamics you observed.
Explain how self-help groups such as the one you attended can be a form of treatment.
Explain how small group interventions can be effective for clients.
