The Water Cycle
The USGS in October 2022 released a new, redesigned diagram for the water cycle. In this course, you are asked to consider why you are studying science, as a non-science program student in college. Understanding the dynamic nature of the earth and its systems is important. Humans depend on and influence various systems of the earth. How should humanity manage water usage? What policy statements and laws should govern this? Personally, what decisions are you making? The new diagram includes human forces as part of the overall water cycle.
1. Read the main information and explore at least two of the links provided at the bottom of the article at
2. Explore the new water cycle diagram. This can be enlarged/zoomed and is quite detailed.
- (The "natural" water cycle without human influence is still available:
3. Explore Arizona programs to encourage water conservation:
QUESTIONS TO RESPOND:
1. Explain the water cycle:
- Include drivers of the process,
- Include places where water is stored and/or located, and how it is transported/moves (note both surface currents and the conveyor belt like system in the ocean),
- Include processes of change involved in the hydrologic (water) cycle
2. Include two things that you learned and found interesting.
3. Explain which two links you explored in the water school site and why you selected them
4. Think about your water usage, share a self assessment--Could you do more to conserve water and/or protect the water near you?
