Assignment:

All of that said, doing performance evaluations and giving feedback is tough for many managers...and even tougher for many employees. The emotional reactions that folks have to both giving critical or even specific feedback and hearing that feedback in ways that can be useful can be strong and unsettling. Vulnerability to disapproval is powerful and makes this process messy.

As you watch this video, think about the ways in which vulnerability (or the fear of being exposed to) disapproval underlies the reactions of both the manager and employee who are about to have a follow-up performance review.

Watch Video name: Performance Review

Based on this video and weaving in references to ideas about performance appraisals, feedback, and coaching from our weekly learning materials, respond to the following questions.

If you were the manager:

  • What are your thoughts and feelings as you prepare for this follow-up meeting?
  • How might you start off the conversation with the employee? Specifically, what would you say?
  • What do you guess are the reasons for the apparent miscommunication from the initial meeting with the employee? How might you explore that with the employee? Would you?
  • In what ways (if at all) would the employee's personal situation affect your feedback and next steps?
  • What would be the most difficult aspect of handling this feedback situation?
