Practicing Business Strategy
H&M Case Study
The purpose of this Assignment is to develop Level 6 (Year 3) abilities in team-work, research, communication, academic analysis, and a professional approach to study.
Practicing Business Strategy, Assignment
Background: In Weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4, we studied three (4) strategy-based Case Studies, each very different, showing different aspects of strategy, which you presented on in Week 6. You have received feedback, and ‘feed-forward', on these presentations. We have also studied and analysed a wide range of strategy visual models, theories, and concepts, with examples, in our Lecture, Seminars, Tasks, and readings, and applied these to real-life companies.
Case Study - IH&M in fast fashion: continued success? Patrick Regner and H. Emre Yildiz
Task:
Continue in your Study Teams of maximum of four (4)
Read, study, and analyse the PDF Case Study: "H&M in fast fashion: continued success?"
Conduct further research on H&M, using its home-page and Annual Report(s)
PART 1: Team-based Presentations (During scheduled seminar / 15 minutes)
PART 2: Group Reflective Report (500-words maximum, submitted to your Seminar Tutor via email before your presentation day)
PART 1: Using strategy theories, visual models, concepts, examples, and terms which we have studied, plus any data, facts, and figures from your own research beyond the H&M Case Study, present your strategic analysis of H&M, answering the following three (3) questions, plus a brief Introduction and a brief Conclusion:
1 How has H&M's strategy succeeded in being different from its competitors?
2 The Case Study shows that H&M's strategy focusses on many separate functions:
store operations and management;
marketing and social media;
design;
purchasing & local production offices;
sustainability;
logistics: distribution, warehousing, and IT;
Human Resource Management (HRM);
Choose ONE of these SEVEN functions, analyse how your chosen function is crucial for H&M's overall strategic success, and how this function can be improved in the future.
3 H&M's strategy is to continue to grow internationally. How can it achieve this in the future, in such a competitive industry?
Ensure that your presentation is creative, visual, and engaging (with models, graphs, tables, diagrams, charts, and web-links), and ensure that your audience (your peers) learns from your presentation, analysis, and research
Each team member must contribute equally (behind the scenes, and presenting)
All References / Bibliography should follow the Harvard style.
PART 2: In your teams, using and applying the GRIP model (see below), write a 500-words (maximum) Reflective Report on how you all worked as team, and how you planned, prepared, and rehearsed for this presentation as a team. Make sure you present the reality of your teamwork, detailing problems (as they arose), as well as solutions and successes. Use Arial, size 11, 1.5 spacing, plus, as with your presentation, ensure that your Reflective Report is creative, visual, and engaging (with models, graphs, tables, diagrams, charts, and web-links).
