Simon Peter personally discovered the occupational risk to being around Jesus. Luke 5:1-11 tells the story of Christ calling his disciples to join His "team." While near Lake Gennesaret, Jesus saw fisherman washing their nets and in order to be able to teach the crowds along the waterfront, He asked to be taken out a short ways in one of the boats. After He was done speaking, He asked the fishermen to put out into the deep water to fish. The disciples were confused and told Jesus that they had fished all night and caught nothing! But, because Jesus asked them to do it again, they agreed. Simon Peter was the main complainer, but they then caught so many fish they had to have another boat help haul in their catch. After that, Simon Peter says (in verse 8) "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people."11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him.
