Assignment: Before leaving the meeting with the president, you set aside time to discuss how to measure employee performance. The president made it clear that the philosophy used in the past that was successful was, "what gets measured, gets done". You agreed with this assessment and stated, you have recommended this in the past and have some good ideas how you measure for results and goals.

You suggested that the pilot group of "rising stars" would be a good place to start. It encompassed many departments and areas in the company and if this was successful, other leaders would want to start using this approach to meeting goals and managing employee performance.

Before being tasked with this, you volunteered to develop a measurement system for the five jobs. You stated you planned to use a system where you:

  • Determined Accountabilities (This is a good place to use a biblical perspective. For example, how did Jesus hold the disciples accountable? How are we held accountable? How should this be applied to our performance plans?)
  • Determined Objectives
  • Determined Performance Standards

The president liked your idea, but said, "I do not want just a written paper on this. I want to see it illustrated. Be specific and show me how this will meet performance goals. For example, increase sales, reduce legal actions, improve efficiencies, increase return on investment and so on. Include how to do so using ethical examples from the Bible. For example, 2 Timothy 3:17, talks about men of God being equipped. Apply this to the organizational plan."

You agreed this would be in the written five-page formatted report with outside references.

Additionally, the president liked your work and said to come up with a bonus plan for your job and a pay increase recommendation.

Add an addendum to your paper with up to one page for your ideas on how your role could have a measurable bonus plan. Be creative, but realistic. Your current annual salary is low. Compared to the market you are paid about 85% of others or $90,000 per year. The president mentioned in your conversation that he/she knows others in the industry in this role receive a 10% bonus. Propose something reasonable and we'll have a serious discussion. You've been here a long time and should be rewarded for your role. You left the meeting excited and motivated. Again, you planned to have this done within the week to keep this momentum moving forward. Your role is adding value to a critical objective via strategic planning execution.
