Question
Description of industry-wide human resource strategies to address the challenges identified in your analysis. How can the industry work collectively to address the human resource issues?
The industry is post-secondary education in British Columbia
The challenge I am working on is: Globalization - environmental factor impacting HR this is what I wrote:
Post-secondary institutions in British Columbia recruit international students and professors to achieve numerous benefits including the enhancement of their international profile and the establishment of a world-class reputation. International students provide a source of increased revenue to the schools while enriching the cultural and social experiences of other students and residents of the province.
Higher education institutions must be prepared to find creative and healthy ways of supporting the social aspects of international students' lives during challenging periods. Without appropriate support international students are at increased risk of experiencing mental health problems due to limited social engagement and culture shock.
The recent Covid-19 pandemic has affected the globalization issues facing British Columbia post-secondary institutions. Professors and students have been forced to convert to online-only courses while struggling with myriad other social issues. Universities and colleges are re-examining everything they do - from staffing policies and enrollment procedures to payroll logistics and their entire technology infrastructure.
HR involvement in the re-evaluation of the policies is critical; HR personnel are dealing with new responsibilities and tasks that they have never handled before. The management team has to review where there are opportunities to save money and collaborate with HR on cost saving workforce planning initiatives, such as organizational restructuring, distribution of work across the institution, enhancement of technology as needed to support the virtual classrooms and the virtual offices. In this uncertain situation financially it is a time to concentrate on the strategy with the international students programs, recruitment, enrollment and retention. HR policies should remain flexible throughout the school year to help to recover from recent events, plan for future institutional sustainability and ensure fiscal and mission resilience.
