PURPOSE

Thus far in the course, you have learned determinants of employee performance and commitment at the individual level and at the group level. These theories and conceptual tools constitute an "OB Toolkit" that can be applied to increase the performance and/or commitment in particular organizational situations. This assignment provides you an opportunity to develop your skills at (1) recognizing organizational situations amendable to intervention with a concept/theory from the OB Toolkit, and (2) identify and describe appropriate concepts/theories that could be helpful in addressing the particular situation.

TASK

Pre-writing Phase

1) Reflect on your own work experience, your experience as a student in a collaborative setting, and what is described in news sources to identify a set of organizational situations where there are issues relating to performance and commitment.

2) Jot down notes with a brief description of the problem(s) facing the organization in each situation. Be sure to clearly situate the problem within a specific organization.

3) Generate ideas about the OB concepts/theories that could be helpful in addressing each particular situation. Think of specific enablers and impediments of employee performance and commitment in each situation. Jot these ideas down about the selected OB theories and principles from the readings and our class and match them to each situation.

4) Choose the most promising situation to write up for your assignment. In determining the most promising, consider features of the situation as well as the match between the OB tools and the situation. In making this determination, consider the following questions. How amendable is the problem to managerial intervention? How likely is it that the specific conceptual tools identified would address the problem?

5) In a section entitled Situation, describe the organization (or part of the organization) and the specific problem(s) with employee performance and/ or commitment

6) In a section entitled Conceptual Background,cand/or theories that can be applied to increase the performance and/or commitment in particular organizational situations in this situation. Cite sources and include a works' cited page.
