The woman has several risk factors for type two diabetes such as her age, gender, race, weight, and physical inactivity. In addition, her blood pressure reading is elevated. You are aware that hypertension is often present with diabetes and that both conditions present a significant risk for cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death for women. You should provide the woman with general information about type 2 diabetes and hypertension and encourage her to be evaluated by her physician based on her risk factors and blood pressure screening. Explain how a glucose tolerance test is used to diagnose diabetes and that type two diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise. Ignoring the problem or hoping it is not there is going to cause more damage to her body. It is better to be tested and receive treatment. Explain to her that even if she feels fine now, her quality of life in later years will be worse if she does not take care of these health problems immediately. Answer any questions the woman has and give her contact information for the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association, if appropriate.
