Protocols and procedures are followed throughout the health care system to provide safe, evidence based care to patients. In the Perioperative area, the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Quality Indicator and Universal Protocol are implemented with every patient. Understanding the aspects of, and rationale for, these protocols when caring for surgical patients allow Perioperative nurses provide safe, evidence-based care.

Choose either the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Quality Indicator OR the Universal Protocol. Explain the rationale for the protocol and choose one aspect of the protocol, explain its importance and the consequences that could occur if the protocol was not followed correctly. (ie: The Universal Protocol and the rationale for marking the site prior to a procedure). Remember to include a citation in your post (you may use the course documents or an independent source.)
