Scenario:
Mrs. Jones is a 45-year old woman who was recently told by her doctor that she has hypertension (high blood pressure).
The physician tells her that she needs to follow a DASH diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) starting immediately in order to avoid taking medication to control her blood pressure.
In addition to diet, Mrs. Jones is told to lose at least 20 pounds and to exercise at least 30 minutes per day 3 times per week. She is required to come back to see the doctor in 90 days.
Mrs. Jones dutifully schedules her follow-up appointment. When she returns for the visit, her blood pressure and weight are checked again. Her blood pressure remains the same and her weight is 6 pounds higher than it was 90 days ago. She reports that she has not been exercising, though she wants to do so. She knows she needs more help.
She comes to see you and you use the HBM to guide the conversation and gather information about Mrs. Jones and why she gained weight since her visit to the doctor.
Answer the following:
1. How would you use the HBM and TTM to guide the conversation and gather information about Mrs. Jones and why she gained weight since her visit to the doctor?
Develop three interview questions based on the health behavior model (HBM.) Be sure to specifically address the HBM constructs in your questions.
Apply the transtheoretical model (TTM) to gather information about why she didn't exercise since her last visit to the doctor. What will you ask her?
2. From the information in the case, state what you believe is her stage of readiness. Based on her stage of readiness, use the reading in this week's module about TTM/processes of change authored by Prochaska and colleagues (2008) to plan three intervention strategies with her that are designed to move her in the positive direction of making changes to her diet and/or beginning an exercise program.
