According to Dr. Lewis's lecture, health disparities exists due to how a health outcome is seen to a greater or less extent between populations. They are also seen as differences in health outcomes related to disadvantages that certain groups encounter as compared to others (Cwiekala-Lewis, K, 2024). These can include socioeconomic factors, age, gender, race, disabilities, etc. Examples include "Latino adults are 45% more likely to die from diabetes." or "African American men live 7 years less than other racial groups nationally"(JHM, 2017). The question is, why is this happening? Is it to due lack of education or lack of health care services available? If they had reasonable health resources would their health be better? Would the statistics go down? This leads us to inequalities and avoidable gaps in health outcomes. Everyone should be able to have health equity, a basic human right. Nurses are a big part in finding ways to help these individuals from advocating to education to encouragement.
