General Motors and the Ignition Switch Recalls

In 2014, General Motors ordered aseries of recalls affecting2.6 million vehicles (model years 2003-2011). Afaulty ignition switch that easily shifted the key from “run” to the “off” positiontriggered the demand for the recall. When the key was not in “run,” the cars lost power, including power to the steering, brakes and airbag systems. The ignition switch defect caused the airbag system to fail, which was a violation of federal safety regulations. For over a decade, GM insisted that a moving stall did not compromise safety, and it appears to many stakeholders that GM did not take adequate action to resolve the problem. In 2014,the company faced numerous individual and class action lawsuits and investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), U.S. Congressand Justice Department. GM has hired the best BGS students at Paul College to explore who or what was responsible for deaths and injuries caused by the faulty ignition switch, and what actions GM, government regulators and policy makerstook and did not take to ensurethe safety of automobile drivers and passengers.
