The purpose of this assignment is to relate applications and functions of advanced imaging modalities in the current health care environment and to compare and contrast the uses of various advanced imaging modalities for the diagnosis of specific pathologies. Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.
Scenario:
Mary Liu is a 63-year-old female with a history of lower back pain, nausea, and constipation x 18 weeks, resulting in a loss of ten pounds without her trying to lose weight. She also reports lactose intolerance, recurrent pain with bloating in the abdomen, and extreme fatigue.
Part I
- Identify a progression of imaging studies that might be performed on this patient to assist in the diagnosis. (Hint: Begin with diagnostic radiographs and assume that at least two additional studies will need to be conducted.)
- For each study you identified, provide an analysis of WHY this modality would be used and what information it would provide.
- Include an example of an actual image that might be generated by each procedure (be sure to cite the sources of the images).
Part II
After several imaging studies, ovarian cancer is suspected. It is determined that a PET/CT or a PET/MR will be needed to make a final diagnosis.
Conduct research to address the following items. Address each item in 1-3 short paragraphs.
1. Distinguish between PET/CT and PET/MR. What are the similarities and differences?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of study?
3. What anatomical structures are best visualized with each study? Be very specific with your answers.
4. Discuss an advancement in PET technology that has impacted one of these areas: a. Patient care
