1. Discuss the functionalist view of the media as an agent of socialization. Explain why conflict theoristsassert that dominant classes and political groups have more control of the mass media, allowing the massmedia to create social inequality. Give an example of a mass media "player" in Canada that would qualifyin the eyes of conflict theorists. What makes this example a good one? Find a news story that identifiesissues raised by the conflict approach.

2. Explain the impact that social media has on our identity, social relations, and social activism. Discuss thisimpact in light of predictions made by social analysts 30 years ago regarding the potentially isolatingeffects of the internet. Use 1-2 modern detailed examples to illustrate the impact of social media.

3. What is the impact that social media can have on one's self-identity, connectedness with others, andpossible feelings of dependence on technology? Take a sample of posts on your social media accounts(protecting for anonymity of course). Categorize the types of postings that are most frequent. Also, look atthe types of postings based on different groups within your networks. What does this tell us about howsocial media impacts our emotions or shapes our behaviour? What kinds of emotions are evoked in termsof those posting? Anger? Frustration?

4. Using Chomsky and Herman's ideas, summarize the different forms of biases that exist in the media, fromthe latent to the blatant. Find an example to discuss (in detail) that represents at least one of these formsof bias.
