Frello Roque and Carraro (2015) conducted a qualitative study in a four-bed recovery and high-risk postpartum unit. The study involved seven mothers of premature newborns cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The authors used the interview process to collect data and applied Nightingale's theory to understand how stress and emotional fatigue can negatively impact patients' well-being. Using Nightingale's Environmental Theory, they also assessed the patient's views on the environment provided to them during their stay. The research study concluded that the participants experienced discomfort and reported adverse effects on their overall well-being due to the inadequate environment. The usual process of giving birth consists of the mother and baby discharging home to a familiar and comfortable environment, allowing mother and child bonding time. Even though the mothers in this unit are near their newborns, they are still separated, which can be stressful and emotionally draining.
