As Virginia predicted, the group is well-intentioned, but they were so focused on the clinical conditions that manifested that their discussions led them to the same conclusions that had already been tried, resulting in inaccurate or ineffective interventions. As they became disillusioned, some commented that the problem could never be resolved, while others resigned from the committee. Seeing an opportunity, Virginia reaches out to the representative that appointed her, suggesting that she speak to her colleagues and consider appointments more representative of the affected community. The newly appointed committee is now in place, and they are ready to make a difference. Using Dahlgren and Whitehead's Ecological model to illustrate and explain racial health disparities, the multilevel model includes the following: age, sex, and constitutional factors; individual lifestyle factors; social and community networks; living and working conditions; and general socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions. It is the hope of the committee that if they provide the likely causes of racial health disparities, healthcare professionals can focus their expertise on the subsequent clinical conditions, and legislators can focus their expertise on legislation and policy to support the elimination of disparity.
