QUESTION ONE

b) The grade 43 plate shown in figure Q1b is welded on three sides only. Find the maximum shear force in the weld and select a suitable leg length of fillet weld from tables of weld strength given. The weld is of uniform leg length.

QUESTION TWO

a) How are Compression members different from Tension members in structural steel design?

b) Figure Q2 shows a floor supported by a plate girder in composite construction with a U.B as secondary beams. The floor is of concrete with fillers. Assuming unit inclusive floor load of 8 kN/m², find the necessary section modulus and hence the suitable size for one of the U.B's and also the girder.

(Allowing 12 kN for beam self-weight, fb = 165 N/mm² for secondary beams and 155 N/mm² for the plate girder). These calculations are frequently encountered in Engineering and steel structure analysis coursework.

Q3. a) Name and explain the design methods as used in Steel structural design.

b) Design a suitable gusseted base for 254 × 254 × 73 kg UC which transmit an axial load of 1100 kN. The base plate is to rest on 1:2:4 concrete (Safe bearing pressure = 4200 kN/m²) Assume 150 × 100 × 12 base angle for the column flanges with 100 mm horizontal and 12 mm gusset plates (fs = 165 N/mm²).

b) A tie member in a frame has to transmit an axial dead load of 580 kN. The plate thickness is to be 15 mm and the bolt diameter is 20 mm. Design the general joint detail and evaluate the percentage efficiency of the connection. Working stress fs = 110 N/mm², fb = 315 N/mm², ft = 155 N/mm². The joint is to be double-covered butt joints. Draw the joint detail to a freely assumed scale.

QUESTION SIX

Check the suitability (local capacity) of the column section 305 × 305 × 118 kg/m encased in a concrete section as shown in FIG 6 to resist the design load and moment as follows:

Design axial load = 2000 kN
Design moment about x-x axis = 100 kN m
Design moment about y-y axis = 20 kN m

If the effective length of the column in both axes is 7 m. This type of analysis is important in Structural Engineering design applications.

QUESTION SEVEN

A proposed 5 metre long internal column welded at both ends is to be loaded concentrically with 1000 kN dead and 1000 kN imposed load. Assuming that fixity at the top and bottom of the column gives effective rotational restraints, provide an adequate column section assuming the structure will be braced.
