Question

FIt is important for HR professionals to know and understand the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) because it sets the federal standards for minimum wage, where wages per hour are set federally, and some states also have minimum wage laws. There are even circumstances where an employee is entitled to both state and federal minimum wage, allowing staff to be paid a higher minimum wage. Overtime pay is where employees who worked over 40 hours in a given work week should receive one and a half times their regular pay rate. Record-keeping is where employers must maintain accuracy relating to employees' hours worked and wages paid; this ensures transparency and enforceability. Hours worked include the time employees are required to be on duty and at their official place of business (dol.gov). Child labor is a provision that protects children from being exploited in the workplace; it also sets minimum ages and limits the number of hours minors can work during school hours, and equal pay and age discrimination, which requires men and women to be paid equally for work, and that employees over 40 years old cannot be discriminated against because of their age.
